what do i look for when pullets are ready to lay. i have a small flock of 3 pullets and a rooster their all production reds. what im i supposed to look for when their ready to lay

Mine will start testing the nest boxes several times a day. Most first eggs are pretty small and sometime misshapen, this is perfectly normal and as they mature the eggs will get bigger and better.
However I would suggest looking the coop and run area for eggs, often they get confused or just haven't figured out where the nests are and will lay them any where.

I added wooden eggs (some use golf balls) to "show" the chickens where to lay.

I'm glad someone else asked this question. Just the other day I notice two of my hens(production reds) getting bright red cones and when I came home from work just an hour ago, one of the hens was roosting by the nesting boxes. She let me pick her up without a peep or squawk. Looked almost dazed....almost like she was sick...they are barely 5 months old.....Should I be looking for an egg anytime soon?

good for you i just wish mine would of done the same thing. this morning i put her in the nest and she got a bit curious she pecked the plastic egg and she stood there quietly and stared down is she close
