What to put in bottom of brooder pen

Hay is fine. Like any bedding, you have to clean it up when it's dirty. I just like the convenience of pine shavings. You can fluff it up and it lasts longer than any bedding I've tried. Also, the pine smell helps mask any poo odors.

I've used it for years and never lost a chick or had any splayed legs because of the pine shavings.

I have newspaper on the bottom and then pine shavings on top of that. It seems easier to clean that way. I just roll up the pine shavings in the newspaper and through it away.
