If the run is not going to be moveable then I would suggest going with gravel. As you can see I'm in WA and we get our fair share of moisture. Even though my birds have about 5 acres they can roam on the area in front of their coop and where I have my various breeding pens inevitably turns into a giant mudhole if I don't go out and hose it down every now and then.
The accumulation of droppings and repeated traffic around the coop will prevent anything from growing. The only way I know to get around that is to rotate where you keep your birds. Otherwise the gravel lets you hose the area down and keep fairly clean.
