What to use as a Window?

We did the ol' cut-it-out method on north and south sides of the coop. It got SO hot around here this summer, it seemed unreasonable not to have windows on all four sides of the coop. A sawsall, three hinges and some hardware cloth and we were in business!

You can also check with any window company. They have small versions of actual house windows that they use to show customers. These windows are small enough for a shed or coop and they are double / triple paned and will keep preditors out. Most have a screen and you can close and lock the windows at night. Most window companies either charge you a little or will just give them to you if you tell them what it's for. They usually throw them away as they really do not pay for the window samples.

While it is very nice to have "real" windows, in Mt. Airy you might be better served to not bother, and just cut openings, cover with hardware cloth, maybe some trim for appearances, and have done with it. My chicken friends in Asheville have very large openings done this way, and they have never had an issue in the winter time with it being too cold. We have one real window, two windows which are always "open", and a fourth which we can latch a wooden cover over if I freak out about it being too cold.

I cut square holes in a metal shed and put in some plexi glass with the plexi resting on the lip of metal I let curve in.All was covered with duct tape.No leak issues.Going to add a few more *windows* before winter sets in. The windows are set high on the wall.
