I'm going to disinfect and clean the roost bar in the coop - I use the DCM, and that ;seems to be working, but that roost is all full of poop, is Pine-Sol OK to use, with a putty knife to scrape off droppings?? I'm curious about chemical use in there with the chicks.....

So would you scrap all the crud off and then wipe it down or spray some bleach /water solution on it.or would you use it straight from the bottle?...over and under the roost?

I guess it all depends what you are disinfecting for.

When I disinfect my incubators I use a diluted bleach in a spray bottle. If I was going to disinfect a porous roost I'd scrape and saturate it with strong yet diluted bleach.

I would suggest scraping the area down to get as much debris off as possible. If you could remove the roost and take it outside would be even better. On a nice dry warm day, paint the roost with kerosene and let it dry before re-installing. This not only kills everything it touches, but prevents mites. I use do this once a year and it works great.

I scrape my roosts every morning with an old hula hoe. This utensil works great for roosts, concrete, wherever there is poo.

In my non-chicken work life, I do some sanitizing. Usually one teaspoon bleach to one gallon of COLD water is safe for things that come in contact with food. Your birds feet and feathers touch the roost, so this might be a good guidline to follow. Use cold water, hot water has some effect on how well sanitizing will work. Let surfaces air dry.

I clean my coop and roosts with bleach water. Ater I have cleaned it rinse with plain water and then left to dry good. I also sprinkle FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous Earth (DE) on the roosts and around in the coop, nest boxes, run and their favorite dusting places. I sprinkle the DE on the roosts and then take a brush and brush it. It helps when cleaning the roosts in between coop cleanings. In the summer I don't use litter in the coop. The coop gets a light dusting on the floor and swished around with the broom which helps keep the floor nice as it is easier to sweep out.
