What treats do you give your chicks???

I've read that citrus is a 'no'. Mine love berries - I give them the raspberries that have gotten a tad too ripe on the vine. Seriously, their favorite green is dandelions, so I make sure I don't pull them all up

. They love a little cooked rice...again that is a moderation thing as it's just empty calories and too many carbs, I've read, will heat them up too much in hot weather. Oh, and frozen banana! Especially great on a hot day. I'll never have to waste that last banana that has gotten too ripe.

In the winter, my girls favorite treat is warmed oatmeal with either plain yougart or cottage cheese mixed in it. Scratch is another winter favorite treat. Summer favorites are: Chard, Turnip and beet greens, but first and foremost......melons!!!! and Too ripe peaches and tomatoes!!! It is just sooo hot right now, that I am keeping rinds in the refrigerator and then taking them out during the heat of the day......poor little chickies are HATING 95 degree days with 75% humidity. They actually want anything cool!

pinhead crickets... most pet stores have them. It's fun. They jump, chickens run... it's really great.

My older birds go CRAZY for flour tortillas. I also give them handful of weeds everyday (my flowerbeds get cleaned out and the birds get treats).

I got one spoiled hen that my father ruined. He was over at my house helping me build another coop. He gave my hen McDonalds!!!!! SHE ATE A DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER! I was mad, but it was kinda funny. She went nuts for it. I don't even eat that stuff... but then again, I don't eat crickets or weeds either. I don't recommend it... it happened before I had a chance to stop it.

Chickens can and will eat just about anything. Just use some sense... onions and other strong flavors will effect the taste of your eggs. Tomatoes can stop them from laying. Neither will kill them, though.
