What type of bird of prey is this

Coopers hawk or red tailed, Coppers is smaller, can't tell the size. I haven't enclosed my garden 12 'x 24', chickens have access to, have had chickens for 3rd summer now and the hawks fly over and think it's too risky, that's my only explanation..... szBKrhKvTX2hC%hK6ZV4CA.jpg 0Cko2lYtRDWaqgMxm6akog.jpg

I mean, I haven't put netting on top, over the entire garden, it's totally open.

It looks visually complicated. Chickens, fencing, mulch, raised beds, bushy plants. Maybe they just can’t get a handle on where to zoom in? I wonder about this a lot. There are people near me whose Black Australorps free range of a huge green meadow, looking beautiful but target-like. And another farm out in an open field where the chickens spend almost all day under the coop. It seems your chickens would be harder to spot.

You are lucky. I have had a hawk kill a bird not 10 feet from me. Once my husband was cutting some wood and I had a small temporary pen for some chicks next to where he was cutting wood. A hawk swooped in and grabbed a chick while my hubby was right next to it.
