I am planning on hatching eggs with the kids in my after school program and adopting the chickens out to the kids after they hatch. I am looking for suggestions on what type of eggs should I purchase. I am looking for something that will have a good chance of hatching (are certain breeds easier/more difficult to hatch?), a fairly hearty egg-layer for those who adopt females, and something that tends to like to be around people, kids in particular. Thank you in advance for any advice!!!

Do you know anyone who has chickens now? Fresh eggs hatch the best. I did well with Orpington mix out of the yard.

The kids will LOVE it!!! If you can find someone local with hatching eggs, even mixed chicks, you'll probably have much better luck i.e. higher hatching rate. I have chicks from my eggs hatching today. 100% hatch rate. Never had that good a luck with shipped eggs. About 90% is the best I've done.

Good luck!

Can you make some suggestions on where to find local hatching eggs? I have looked on craigslist, freecycle, and local harvest to no avail. Thanks!

Where are you located? Have you thought of posting an ad on Craigslist in the farm section? I'm sure folks around here would donate. If you were close to where I am, I surely would.

I would post something on Craigslist in the farm and garden section that you are looking for hatching eggs. As far as breeds, any dual purpose breed should be fine. Different breeds have different bloodlines with different temperaments. That said, you would do best to just talk to the specific breeder. If you were in my area, I would supply you with all of the hatching eggs you would want.

Good luck and have fun!
