I am new to this so I am hoping to buy chickens on laying age or close and trying to figure out what feed is best. In the basics section of Backyard chickens, I read about grower ration, layer ration, starter-grower and layer. Just what am I supposed to use? I seem to gravatate to layer ration, but see several varieties at the feed store (Cal Ranch). Can someone help me wade through all this and tell me what is best?

It all depends on the age of the chickens you get. Hatchling to 6 weeks get starter. 6 weeks to 20 weeks get grower some stay with starter till 20 weeks. At 20 weeks you go to layer or a flock feed. Depending on breed also makes protien choises. Egg layer breeds like leghorns, sex links. anconas and ee do not need more than 16% protien except in moult. Heavy breeds like Rocks, Orpingtons wyandottes, jersey giants, brahmas ect need more protien like 20% to grow and lay well.
