My chicks are about three months of age. When should I stop feeding them grower/starter feed? And what is a good brand of food? I have a total of 8 hens. 4 Black sex linked and 4 amber links.
Thank you in advance.

i gave mine layer feed when they are 18 weeks old thats when you can start looking for eggs some people say to not give layer feed tell there first egg but i give it to them when they are 18 weeks so they can be ready for there first egg i use the brand dumor thats what ive always used and they seem to like it hope this helps

You can continue with what you're feeding, change to Flock Raiser, All Flock or Multi Purpose ... Not necessary to feed Layer, however when they start showing signs of laying or lay the first egg, put out an dish of Oyster Shells.

Reason Layer is not recommended until chicks are at least 18wks is the extra calcium may/will cause harm to their kidney, as it would for Roos. I feed Chick Starter for the first month/small bag which I ferment so does last longer, then switch to Flock Raiser that I also ferment.

How do you ensure that the young ones get the starter feed and the layers get the layer feed once the littles ones go down into the run with the big girls?

That's a good question, not sure how anyone does it but that's why I switch everyone to Flock Raiser & keep an separate dish of Oyster Sheills for the hens (chest level of hens) ... Chicks may peck at it/try it but not eat enough to cause an issue (I've read).

i have three chicks that live outside and i feed grower to all of them and just put out oyster shell. the big laying hens will eat it when they need it
