What type of feedback does this deserve?...

I recently recieved 6 bantam eggs from someone...they seemed fairly well packed, newspaper in the box, in an egg carton with each egg wrapped in paper towel. They arrived in 2 days. The egg carton was a litte dirty (stained from wetness) as well as the paper towel around one egg....though I could find no sign of any cracking or anything. Upon candling all but 1 egg arrived with a detached or partially detached air cell. I attempted to incubate all of the eggs and not one ended up with any development......1 egg developed a blood ring (bacterial growth), and one I thought had some development, but it was just a clump of bacterial growth. The seller was notified every step of the way with what was going on. There has been no offer of any kind for new eggs or any sort of refund. I understand that they can't control what the post office does with the box...but I recieved 8 other eggs from someone else a few days after that first set that took 3 days to get to me from Maryland...they should have arrived within 1 to 2. Those eggs were packaged similarly (but with newspaper around the eggs instead of paper towel)...of them one had a completely scrambled air cell (several small bubbles)....but of the 8, 5 began to develop...so I know that its not my incubator... I am very disappointed that I am now out money with nothing to show for it....but I don't want to leave someone bad feedback if its really just luck of the draw...so I'd like to know how other's feel about this situation! I would greatly appreciate any opinions!

I sell eggs as well as buying them. A lot of work goes into wrapping and packaging eggs to arrive intact. It IS up to the seller to sell only fresh, fertile eggs, but I also believe that if you buy hatching eggs that are shipped you should expect the worst and hope for the best. If the seller sells fresh eggs that arrive to you intact, then that's just the gamble you took. I paid $50 for a dozen eggs and got 2 chicks, it's just a risk you take when you buy eggs. If you are sent what was advertised, and they arrived in one piece then I think you got what you paid for. It doesn't mean you like it, but you can always try again with another seller.

that is tough....I had 2 batches from the same person. first batch had 6 that all started to develop, second batch(7) came with a few detached air cells and only 2 with any development. Completely not the sellers fault as the P.O was obviously more rough with the second batch. If it were a byc'er I would come straight out and ask if there was a chance to get a replacement for shipping only or at a reduced rate. If they were cheap I would write it off personally. Sounds like yours was handled roughly and also got wet which is not a good combination for hatching eggs.

The box was not in any way wet...neither the newspaper around the egg carton. The egg carton itself had staining on the inside as well as the paper towel wrapping one of the eggs. They were not wet when they arrived, just stained. When I inspected the egg I couldn't find any visible signs of damage...though I think that may have been of the eggs that ended up with bacteria growing in it.

I know that getting eggs shipped is a risk...which is part of why I am asking

ah, when I read of the staining I missed that it was just the carton....the seller should have used a clean one, I get what you are saying. Well, they were obviously mishandled as they almost all had detatched air cells, they won't develop if COMPLETELY detatched, although that hasn't stopped me from putting them in the bator (hoping). Personally, I would still ask about buying at a reduced rate so you can get a chance to try again. I have had to pay full price for replacements(which ended up giving me a very expensive single comb silkie

) and I have only had to pay shipping on others. It also lets me know who I will deal with again..... I don't expect free or reduced, but it is nice....

Nothing you are describing sounds like the seller did anything wrong. These are risks you take when you order eggs through the mail. Also, a blood ring indicates a likely problem with incubation. That is indicative of an egg that was fertile and partially developed, dying early in incubation. To think it was a bacterial problem from a stained carton is taking quite a leap. With waterfowl, we deal constantly with extremely soiled eggs. It is understandable that you are disappointed, but welcome to the club. It doesn't sound like the seller did anything wrong. You are going to sometimes have good hatches with shipped eggs and sometimes horrible hatches with shipped eggs. That is simply the nature of the beast.

The bacterial growth appeared within 3 days of the eggs going in the incubator (no veining or anything else developed besides the ring in one egg and a blob in the other......and rough shipping certainly can cause it to happen when a tiny crack invisible to the naked eye allows bacteria in.

Regardless........my question was simply what type of feedback I should leave as I've only had eggs shipped a couple times and have never shipped eggs myself......If I was shipping eggs and had someone who had no development in their eggs I would offer a new eggs plus shipping or a refund minus shipping...it just seems to me to be the right thing to do...I wasn't sure if there is any generally accepted response to such an outcome or not.

I would leave no feedback. I don't think the seller has any culpability, nor do I think the seller has displayed any real reason for great feedback. I have shipped many eggs and have spent many hundreds of dollars for either very poor or no hatches.

I once had eggs shipped from one of the top breeders with a great reputation. Other folks have had and are having great hatches. I think I hatched on of 24 eggs.

The eggs were not broken but the cells were a mess. Just the way it is.

This seller did offer to send more eggs if I paid shipping, I didn't take the seller up on it, probably should have but I was not upset with the seller in any way.

Trust me, what you are describing is a fertile egg that partially incubated and died early on (veining or not). That is what results in a blood ring like what you are describing. That indicates potentially a problem with incubation. I know that is not what you want to hear, but that is reality. The other eggs not developing could also be a problem with the shipping and/or incubation as well and have nothing to do with the seller. This is why 99.999% of the time sellers have warnings plastered all over that there is no guarantee on hatching eggs. I understand your disappointment and I am fully aware that you don't want to hear this, but this is the way it goes with hatching eggs. Nothing you have said shows any evidence that the seller did anything wrong. Why would you even consider negative feedback?

Rough shipping surely can cause bacterial growth...whether or not embryonic development begins. As I said I have other eggs developing in the same incubator. Regardless....Obviously I never was strongly considering negative feedback or I wouldn't have asked the question. My last response also in no way indicated that I plan on leaving negative feedback...which I don't.
