I bought what I was told was a copper maran rooster. I have been crossing him with my copper hen and have gotten several black chicks. some with signs of red in them some without, but I also seem to be getting lots of yellow chicks. What have I really got?

The first picture is of a hen, right?

The Maran rooster could be a mixed breed.I have never saw a Maran rooster look like that.He looks like he has Red Jungle Fowl in him.

yes first picture is the hen. Wow never heard of red jungle fowl, but thanks I will look that up. here are a couple of pictures. the first chick hatched was the yellow one in the basket in first picture. then I had four more. three black and one reddish. the next picture is of the two most recent.

I don't think they are--never thought about that. Thanks.

How do the chicks have the feathered leg when the rooster doesn't? Is it a dominant allele? Will they have enough maran in them to lay the chocolate eggs if they are hens?

I think the hen is part of your problem. I don't think she's a pure BCM. I've never seen a pure BCM have that much color down the chest and body. She lacks the copper collar a Marans should have. I think she's mixed with something, and that's causing mixed chicks. The rooster could also be a mixed breed, you'd have to try breeding him to another hen and see what happens.

I agree.

Thanks will try to get another hen--currently she's my only one.
