In traps, we always had good luck adding peanut butter to the mix. It seems like some of the critters like stinky stuff, some like sweet, some like savory...I would just kind of put out a mini smorgasbord and that way they can choose. I hope you catch whatever did it! Again, best of luck!

Most likely the attacker was an animal that is more opportunistic than an experienced predator. It looks as if it were mauled and my guess is a dog but if it was through wire it could be anything. In the open raccoons and coyotes are usually successful. Hope you get it whatever it is.

Thank you all! We did loose another chicken, a grey Japanese hen that was with my gray Japanese male. The head was torn off. I am thinking a coon as well. Possibly a young, and inexperienced coon. Both of our neighbors have chickens. :/

That is what coons like to do, take off the heads. A farmer told me it is because they like the combs. Anyway we trapped coons here in TX and found that when we put bacon in the trap, we caught a coon. They love the smell of bacon. Glad your hen is doing better.

We put some more bandages on her. My mother tried to fix the hole in her chest. I don't know what happened. But she started acting funny. Now she is all better.

On the bacon did you cook it?

She may be a little shocky from the experience and needs peace and quiet. Vitamins/electrolytes will help greatly. Poor girl..

But I am not giving up on catching what ever severely wounded her. I am going to set the trap every night until I catch a coon or something.
