What type of Sand

I have a run/enclosure area that used to be grass, but is now just dirt/mud. I'm wanting to put sand in there to hopefully get rid of the mud and allow better drainage. What kind of sand do you use? I got 2 bags of play sand, thinking that would be cleaner, but am now concerned that it would be too fine. Should I get construction sand?

I went to the place that I buy gravel and got river sand. Varied size grains, $30 a yard. Works well, from my experience.

Playsand is best. Landscaping sand has quite a bit of silica which can be harmful to their lungs.
