Today I let my ducks out and I noticed that my drake mask was pail right on the ''nose'' as I call it. It feels like its is filled with liquid. Its real squishy tot he touch. Is this just more of his mask growing or is it infected? Is it something that will pass, if not is it something I can treat or does he need a vet?

the does look to be a light hot spot doesnt it.
Id say give him some erythrimycin (sp) or a broad spectrum antibiotic like augmentin

I don't think I've had any with their caruncle knob get like that before. My chocolate drake currently has a brownish spot on his but it's been colder here at night and it usually goes away so I don't bother it unless it gets worse.

Your boys face doesn't look good at all though, Did you notice any gunk coming from the scab there? I would do some antibiotics. the caruncles always are very soft and squishy feeling but if it really feels that much different than the rest of his face I would also worry a bit. I hope someone else chimes in with more help.

Some good news. I went to put him inside for the night and it looks like some of the color is returning. Its its not any better by tomorow morning I'll see what kind of antibiotics I can dig up.

Here is a picture that I just went out and took. The first layer of skin is almost completley gone. The dark triangle that you can see is what hasnt fallen off yet. Does anybody know what this is.

Looks like some kind of infection or maybe even an abscess - He will need antibiotics- and to have it lanced or drained if either are the case. Does the area feel very hot ? Poor Duckie- it looks very sore.

Wow. I bet thats painful. Looks like an abscess to me and it needs to be drained. If it were me I'd take him to a vet, but maybe someone who has lanced an abscess like that before can give you better advice. Poor guy! Ouchie!

Do you have any benadine on hand ? You should be able to pick that up at a feed store maybe in the horse section. I myself if it was me would lance it open and keep it from sealing like you would a boil to get all the yucky stuff out letting it drain. Treat with some antibiotics and once drained treat with ointment. I am not a vet but have had to deal with several boils on my daughter. Shes got a auto immune illness and gets boils alot. I have never had one but they are I hear painful, and your poor ducky that looks painful. Poor guy. Also want to sneak in and tell you he's a handsome guy. I love muscovies.

Are you in a COLD climate or had any really cold weather? The blackish color and the location reminds me of frost bite that we used to see at times on large combs of chickens. I used to keep Muscovies in cold upstate NY and we would keep the drakes confined because the large growth on the face could frostbite easy, the female ducks of our line had very small masks and we would let them go outside in the winter time if they wanted and they usually did.
