what vaccines do chickens need

Many people buying from hatcheries will get Mareks vaccine, and sometimes coccidiosis vaccine for their chicks. Other vaccines depend on where you live, and for instance if you live in hot humid climates where mosquitoes are bad, fowl pox vaccine may be something you would do. The problem with vaccines as some had to be repeated periodically to maintain the effects. Most people don't vaccinate for anything at all, but I would recommend the Mareks vaccine (especially if you read the emergency forum here.) It is best given at hatcheries, and is best given to day old chicks. Most feedstore chicks are not vaccinated. Jefferspet, Strombergs, and Twincitiespoultrysupplies all sell poultry vaccines. Here is some reading for you:

I would buy a book on raising chickens, or you can search the Learning Center at the top of the page. Mareks disease is a terrible neurological disease causing paralysis or tumors, and sometimes blindness in chickens. It is caused by a virus.
