I think the Doms and the Javas where the first breeds to be bred in America...I'm sure other chickens were brought over on ships!!

my guess would be a hardy dual or triple purpose breed. some sort of rangy and wise free ranger.

Maybe the question should be when did the chicken cross the pond, and what breed was it??

Darwin only cataloged 18 breeds of chicken back in the...1800s was it? So we don't have too many to choose from.

If the Polynesians came first, it was probably some type of Jungle Fowl.

If the Europeans came first, it was likely some kind of mutt barnyard chicken. I don't think my ancestors paid as much attention to breed purity as we do now.

A breed believed to be very genetically similar to dorking were the first to be brought over from England on the Mayflower by the pilgrims. Dominiques were developed here, not brought over.
