what watering systems do you use?

Last year my husband installed a drip irrigation system on our front porch ferns. When I saw how easy it was I decided I would try my hand at making watering chores easier and faster. Now I turn it on scrub and dump and I can feed while everything fills up.

I use the 5 gallon rubber water buckets and have 8 pens so filling all these buckets every day was very time consuming. I took 1/2 PVC pipe and used a nipple connector (Lowes) with the drip irrigation watering hose (also at Lowes) going to each of the 5 gallon buckets. This way I turn on the water, go to each pen and dump scrub and rinse. They all fill up and I have a trench the overfill goes into. My next project will be to put an overfill hose in each bucket so I can run the overfill into atrench outside the pens.

Well it works for me anyway. Rhonda

I cut rectangular openings in both 4 and 6 inch pvc pipe, different lengths, for different size chicks. added end caps on one end, clean out fitting on other end. Put a float valve from Tractor Supply in one end using a garden hose conected to it.As chicks drink, fresh water flows in keeping water level. When needed a common mop can be used to clean. Unscrewing clean out plug is easy.

Me too--LOVE them. I also have a float valve on a small tub for one pen.

I have 50 chickens and use a 50-gl water barrel with a LG automatic watering bowl attached at the bottom. Although I do have one chicken who continually tries to stick her feet in the bowl, for the most part this system works really well and only requires a flip over to dump out the backwash. Yep, in case you all don't know it, chickens backwash like crazy. That's the only explanation for them to have a dirty water bowl with my system. It's got to be the contents of their crops falling out of their mouths when they drink. For the past four years when I only had 13 chickens, I used the same barrel but with a dog watering nipple on it. I decided this wouldn't be enough anymore for all 50 chickens.
