Digital ones need to be calibrated just the make sure, they're usually off a few degrees and can wear out. I don't think that was the issue though.

I will have to figure out how to calibrate them

After 24 hours I would have helped too. I’m not usually one for helping but if they zip it usually means they have done absorbing and are ready for out. Sometimes there is no rhyme nor reason for things happening so try not to beat yourself about it
