What were these mallards doing?

I seen like 4 or 5 green head mallards looking like they were attacking 1 hen (the female mallard) and would not stop. The were even grabbing her by her head and holding her down. What does this mean?

Most likely one was mating (or trying to) and the rest followed the first.

That is so typical in breeding season, poor girls too many drakes. They have been known to drown females gang mating them.

I rescued mallards that was in an oil spill in a local creek. We kept them as their home wasnt getting clean of the oil. When they got old enough too mate, I hated it. They are so cruel about it. They seemed to always do it in their pool and I was always afraid the girl would drown. Not wanting babies I would break it up when I seen it happening. Such a cruel sight.

I believe these are wild mallards.
