WHAT, WHEN, and HOW to feed cracked corn?

Lazy J Farms Feed & Hay :

Interesting.

I bet the burr mills they used 100 years ago are just as efficient as the roller mills used in modern feed mills.

I have no clue.

But I would bet the cracked corn that I have been buying has been sifted.

I wouldn't bet the farm on that, I don't know of a mill that I work with with a sifter or a shaker for their corn.

I would, there is not a bunch of dust in the bag.
It's pretty obvious. Common sense tells me so.

If the corn is cracked properly you wont' get dust. I bet the dust was pulled off in a cyclone not sifted.

The book is wrong!!

I am not trying to be rude, I am simply tired of the spreading of misinformation and untruths about feed and feed ingredients here on BYC.

It must be in the name.. I know exactly how you feel.. there are times I could just scream at what some people come up with as fact.

maybe some of the nutritional value is lost due to oxidation..
I am saying maybe,mind you..

I used to get corn and oats ground up for all my chickens, layers and broilers alike... If the nutrition is lessened by just cracking, grinding must have been awful.. I cannot say that the prepared feed I am buying is superior to that mixture..
I know my chickens o not put on the extra fat like they did on the ground feed..

The information I passed on to L*A*G yesterday was found in the "Treat Chart" sticky

when the corn is cracked, the ENTIRE kernal is simply rolled-over with a mill stone or run thru a crusher-- NOTHING is "lost"...

It breaks open the mostly undigestible shell so the nutritious inside is available to digestion... (Sorry-- I mis-spoke on the name of it tho!)

Remember- the outer shell is bran-- and THICK bran at that--
Sorry to be gross- but haven't you ever noticed whole, undigested corn in poo? That is because the corn is sealed against digestion by the "bran"...

keep something in mind... ANYONE can write a book... I have gotten a hold of books on everything from raising puppies to gardening that had from "less than reputable" information to some that was downright harmful (like using systemic insecticides on tomatoes, and smacking puppies as a part of training!)

NEVER take the info from a single source as Gospel-- read several books by different authors, look for credentials, and ask people who have actually been doing what you are interested in for a long time-- they are better sources than ANY one book!

I have often seen whole corn pass through cows and hogs .. I do not recall seeing whole kernels in chicken Poop.. the corn goes into the crop and then into the gizzard.
the gizzard grinds and digests until whatever in reduced to small particles.. I do not think large particles can pass out of the gizzard..

AND use your own good common sense.
unless there's somethign living in the corn kernel, chopping or crushing it should not make it lose anything. As long as it's fresh, teh corn shoudl have pretty much the same nutritional value.
It's like saying a steak is less nutritious is you turn it into a big ole hamburger...
