I'm incubating some eggs for my neighbor. They are from his black sex link hens and Dominique rooster. What traits should they have? Can they be sexed at hatching or will they have different traits?

Hi ZooSD, no idea but I'd like to know myself. I don't think they could be sexed but I don't know enough to know.

No, you will not be able to sex your birds by color at hatching. Even BSLs bred to BSLs don't breed true, much less when bred to another breed. Since your BSL hens are Rhode Island Red roo X Barred Rock hen and you're breeding them to a Dominigue rooster (which is also barred), the offspring will likely have some barring tendencies, perhaps along with some red feathering from the RIR in its ancestry. It's impossible to predict with certainty what they will look like as they will be mixed breeds.

Thanks for the replies. I'm doing this as a favor for my neighbor and they asked me. I could only tell them that I thought breeding a hybrid they would most likely have more traits of the original breed. I've never dealt with these breeds before. We'll see, one just hatched a little while ago and it's dark with a white spot on it's head.

That can the genes of the Barred Rock in the BSL hen coming through. It's not going to be a reliable sexing color in this case as both male and female Barred Rock chicks have a white spot on a black head.
