I am starting a breeding program with my birds. They are Bantam Cochins. Male is a bad quality frizzle. There are two females. One female is a Black Frizzle Cochin and a Mottled Cochin. I am getting more show quality birds to show. I was wondering how to figure out how many will be Frizzled, and how much will be show quality. Thank you!

Well if the cock is bad quality maybe none will be show quality. Ditch him and get yourself the highest quality cock you can afford. He is 1/2 the flock. He will have a much bigger impact on the flock than the females because his seed will be spread further and faster. If a female doesn't nick, you can cull her and her babies with no problem. If the male isn't working out he can pollute a whole season or flock in very short time. You must have a very high quality male or you are just spinning your wheels. Absolutely no way around this fact. And in a singular way, that is a very comforting thing.

Don't use a mottled bird with a black flock because mottling is recessive and will haunt you for years. Cochins are exceedingly common. decide what it is that you want: Black or mottled, black frizzle or mottled frizzle, and then begin there.
