What would come from these two?

I have roosters who are either Production Reds or RIR's. I think.

My hens are Black Jersey Gaints. What can I expect if the two breed. If I allow them to breed am I making a mistake or could it turn out well? I am new to chickens as I was planning to raise only ducks.

Just for the record I didn't plan on having different breeds. It just ended up that way. The Reds came as warmers but how could I not fall in love with these babies. So I kept them. While in the feed store the owner offered me the black hens. Now I'm confused about what will happen should we have babies.

According to the chicken calculator you will have all black chicks. It just depends on what you want to do with them. If just for pets, they should be good because the black giants are a docile breed. If for layers, that should work too because the reds are good layers. Hope that helps.

Yup! Sounds like a good mix to me.

Oh thank you. What I am planning is to have layers and chicks. I'm just getting started though and will need to build a bigger pen. Right now there are 2 hens and 3 roosters in an 8X10 space. I just gave away two of the Reds and hope to give away one more. I know I only need one with the two hens but I worry what I would do if something happened to the one rooster. I do have a space to put the second rooster should I have any fighting or trouble.

I understand that egg-laying ability is passed on from the rooster. Can others confirm this?

If that is true, you should produce good laying hens from your Rhode Island Red or production red rooster. Do you have any pictures of the roosters?

And no other chickens are going to mess with the Jersey Giant momma. :)

Not correct, most egg genes are autosomal (come from both parents). Not sure whether jersey giants go broody or not, but if they do, I'd bet on one of my broody silkies if it came to a match.

Thank you for correcting me.

In that case, they should still be good at laying eggs. The Rhode Island Red lays about 5 eggs a week on average in a year, and the Jersey Giant lays about 3 eggs a week on average in a year. That probably means that hens from this cross will lay about 4 eggs a week on average in a year.

The information I found on Jersey Giants stated that they rarely go broody. So the offspring most likely would not be broody, because most Rhode Island Reds, and especially production reds, rarely go broody.

Don't be surprised if your black chicks come out with red leakage as they grow. Black covers most everything but cannot totally cover up red for some reason.
