Hello!! I was thinking about trying to raise a sustainable(ish) flock that would be good for both meat and eggs. But, on one hand, I don't want to take forever to raise the meat birds, on the other hand I want something that's better than Cornish Xs (don't really wanna have to repurchase EVERY YEAR!!)
Soooo....
I was looking around and I was wondering what I'd get if I got 5 Golden Laced Wyandotte pullets, 5 Buff Orpington pullets, 5 White Plymouth Rock pullets and a White Plymouth Rock male. (Place I'm looking you have to purchase 5+ of a breed, 15 min order, that's why the numbers).
The Buff Orps and Wyandottes are both large laying birds and the Plymouth Rocks are quick growing and also will lay (I'm assuming!). Any ideas on how well this flock would do?? Would I need more roosters? Should I get different breeds to cross?? Are any of these at all broody or would I definitely need to incubate fertile eggs? I don't really want a flock of all the same colored birds, that's why the different breeds. Also it seems like most breeds are either layers or take a long time to get to 4-5 pounds so I figured crossing would increase both.
Thanks for any info!!
Lauren
