After googling I agree that it is probably a groundhog hole.

I recommend if you have a dog to use it to store poop in. the ground hog will dig it out and reopen it later if you can't break the chain by disturbing the den. if you suspect the critter is still in there use an exhaust hose on the tail pipe of a car to kill whatevers down there then fill in the hole. if the owner of the hole dies in it they usually don't reopen them.

Looks like the tunnels we had when there was a rat problem. Ever see any rats, or have to replace the food more often than you expected to? (Rats love dog food. We started using Neem oil on some that the dogs couldn't get to; it's supposed to keep rodents from reproducing, is what we were told.)
