What would you do if you lost a goose?

My neighbors came over with a goose today. It just showed up in their yard after a storm. It follows them around. I gave them some feed and stuff to take care of it for a bit. We don't know of anyone by us who has geese.

How far would a goose wander? How soon would it take the owners to notice it was missing? Night head count? How would you go about looking for it? Check Craig's list lost & found? Neswpaper lost and found? I'd be a little hesitant to advertise found goose just in case someone thinks "ooh free dinner". What's the best way to find its owner?

I would just feed and care for it. If owners show up looking for a goose well there it is!
They can travel several miles when frightened or chased off.

Be sure to call the local animal shelters. They may a call from the owner.

I would also tell folks at the feedstores, incase someone is looking for their beloved pet.

Doing nothing is not the right thing to do. Sorry, but you really need to take an active roll to either find the owner or turn the bird over to someone who will. What if it was your dog or cat that got out and found by someone. Would you want them to just take it and keep it until you happen to find the random home it went too?

Sorry, I didn't intend that to sound mean or anything. Just putting forth my opinion.

I would contact the local Sherrif. I doubt that he would do anything except stick a note on his blotter in case someone called to report a missing goose. Contact the local shelters if any for the same reason. Here feed stores always have places where you can post about lost and found animals. The waterfowl people in the area have a loose word of mouth network that I would contact. Finally our local newspaper is always looking for local context and they would run a story on the lost bird if they had space.

Well I'm not keeping it, the neighbor is. His kids have already named it. They have put up a sign at the end of the road. My biggest concern is that he seems to be missing his flock. I think putting up a sign in the feedstores is a great idea- much better than Craigslist or the newspaper.

keep in mind that goose people do not visit the feed stores as often in the summer as duck or chicken people because the goose tends to live off the pasture then.
