About a month ago, I bought a new coop that came with six chicks from some very nice people that were concerned about predators in their area. These chicks were their beloved pets, and it was obviously heartbreaking to let them go.
They are fine chicks, but the problem is, I want to get a few of a different variety. . . And I want to sell 4 of the leghorns.
I know, legally, ethically, etc, that these are now MY chicks, to do what I will, and there is no reason I can't sell them, but to sell them after only a month. . !
It seems flaky and dishonest. I can't even really put my finger on why. I bought the coop, and the chicks were already there. I didn't pick them out, and made no promises of a forever home, but to just not want them anymore seems like such a bad reason to sell them, especially because I will be getting more immediately.

Hmm, that’s a tough one. Maybe put yourself in their place and think about what you’d want someone to do if you sold them your pets, and then they decided they didn’t want to keep them. Or think about how you’d feel if somehow you saw them again, and they asked about the chicks. If you can find a course of action that makes you feel ok in these hypotheticals, you’ve probably found a solution you can live with and not feel bad about.

I just don't know! I'd be a little sad, but *I* would understand.
I haven't actually gotten the chicks want yet, so maybe I will get those, raise them until the appropriate size to blend with the rest, and *then* decide if I can afford to add onto the coop or sell the leghorns...

Just keep in mind that this is an established flock , adding new ones is not always a success and upsetting the balance will disrupt egg laying and the peace ,

Saying that , we are selling our herd of dexter cows and calf’s , I understand that if they decide to butcher one that they are not mine anymore , I’ll be sad but I have to let them go . These people let them go , but they could easily be upset at you ..

Think about it

I would sell the leghorns to someone who I know will be taking care of them. I sell rabbits and I do a feed check! They bring some feed, if it lost color= bad storage which means bad housing or its old, if it stinks= old or it is moldy, if it is green and stink free= I sell to them.
It is difficult but a trusted route for me!
