What Would You Pay For A Nice Cochin Roo?

what beautiful birds!

none of my birds are near the quality you have, but I'd probably be in the same boat even with quality birds. I'm trying to sell a Rhodebar hen from a breeder---not stellar quality, but decent enough, a great layer and unusual. Asking $25 for her---had one response asking if I'd take $15 "cause that seems to be the going rate". Going rate on what? Jeepers, even my hatchery birds or mixed breeds don't leave here for less than $20 for a laying bird under 2 years old. I am having a harder time selling young birds this year, though, also....not sure what's going on.

I think $25 for a Rhodebar hen is a steal for a backyard flock.

All I can figure is the backyard chicken boom is over. Last year I listed a dozen cull pullets for sale for $15 each. The only people who responded wanted ALL 12 pullets for $15. Prior to that I had people who were no-shows, stopped replying out of the blue, etc. I give up. I feel bad having to cull layers just as they start laying, but I don't see that I have any other choice. My mentor, the last of the long time Faverolles breeders in the US, doesn't bother to try to sell any of his either. He just gives his extras to a friend for pet food.

Keesmom, I love your Faverolles! I've always wanted some, but can't find them anywhere around here!

The going rate around here for regular chickens, fpr example Cochins, Rir, leghorns, the works, is $30 for hens and $20 for roos.
More for fancier birds. for example, a Paint Silkie hen could get 60-70 bucks EASY. with the chicks going at an easy $20.
Crazy how it changes so much from place to place...I'm glad I live where I do!
My little SQ great stock bantam mille fleur Cochins get about $20 a day old chick...never tried to sell an adult yet, but I'm sure they'd have a pretty high going rate :-D
