What'd y'all think about installing a mister in my coop?

I live in Texas and although I think I've spoiled by flock beyond belief, I think they're still struggling with the Texas heat. My boss suggested that I install a mister. Has anyone provided their chickens with this type of spoilage?

I have a mister system in my 40' run with my 9 gals. In fact, it's on and providing relief for them today as it is currently 102°.

It took a bit for them to their brief bout of fear over the noise it made when it came on, but they like it. So do I when I'm sitting out there with them.

I was talking to DH today about the heat and he mentioned some people do misters. Do you have pictures or can you say how you set it up?

I wouldn't put it in the coop, it will make an awful mess. But it would be great in the run.

I'm in Central Texas and just finished installing some misters in my chicken run. Lowe's had a $29 kit that worked perfect to run across the top roof peak in the dog run/pen I keep them in (10ft w/6 misters). I've used them for my rabbit hutches for years so will see how the chickens like them. I also will put a fan on out there to keep air circulating. This 105* heat better stop soon...I HATE Texas in the summer.

We don't normally get 100+ degrees this time of year. it's usually late July and August for us. I'm dreading it when they do get here. It will be unberable.

I left the water hose on just a little so the chickens could walk through the cool water. They are in the shadiest part of our yard and it is about 10 degrees cooler back there and there is a breeze but they are still miserable. I put frozen bottles of water in their water dishes and they will hang out near the dish. I guess it sets out a cool feeling. I put a couple in the dogs water as he suffers much more. He is a cold weather dog. I need to rehome him upnorth someplace cold. He would be in dog heaven then. Poor ting is miserable here in this heat. He lays by the fan all day and don't get up hardly even to drink until it gets dark and the heat subsides a bit. I may have to move his water closer to him so he will drink more during the hart part of the day.

I put my water hose on mist when i water the chickens and get the run real wet so it forms puddles. After I leave they will walk around in it but they want nothing to d with the misting water. I think a mister would be a waste of money with my group.

We live in the high desert. Temps above 100 this week. My chicks do not like the mister on hand sprayer because of the noise. They run into the hot coop to hide and that just defeats the purpose.

I hose everything down. The ground, the tree in the run, the outside of the coop. That works wonderfully.
I want to go camping next week so I will put in our people mister which is a line mister and has 6 sprayers on it. I will put it around the tree and that will keep it cooler.

Make sure you put the waterers in the shade, toss in some ice in the waterers, provide shade, put straw on bare ground, hose everything down during the day. If you work during the day, try the misters.

Once a bird gets heat stroke, it is very hard to overcome. They are fragile in that way. Sometimes they are never the same if they do survive.

Note: it may be a different story if you live where there is humidity. Use a fan to keep the air moving.

Here in MN, we hit a heat index of over 100 (heck, 5 months ago wasn't it -20F??) last week. Anyhoo...

My wife watered the chicken run with a sprinkler and the chickens were out playing in the rain! I think a mister would be more efficient with water but a regular sprinkler works for now.
