whats a better roosting pole

I use 2 x 4's and secure them very, very well. Also a wooden ladder to assist in reaching the roosts.

Whatever you use, check for splinters or sharp edges. You don't want to invite bumblefoot.

chickens like to sit on top of flat feet.... unlike wild birds that grip onto the tree limbs etc.

I know this goes against prevailing wisdom, but our flocks always did fine with round roosting poles made out of scavenged branches around the farm.

Not once did we witness the "bat effect" but maybe they all assumed that position once we locked the coop door and left for the night.
