I have 24 hens, 8 dif breeds, 20 newbies 22wks old.
Average for last wk 7/19-7/25 is 10.57 eggs. Is that good?
I have 2 CM's and if they're laying I haven't seen anything that looks like a CM egg. Most are pink/peach/tan. The darkest I've gotten comes from Delaware who is not a newbie. Come to think of it I haven't seen either of them in a nest.
These are the breeds I've seen on the nest.
Aust, BO, GLW, SLW, Del, Dom, Rd non-friz bant.
I haven't seen my rd. friz bant on the nest nor the CM's.
The older Dels have a 3.7 a day avg. The most I've gotten in a day is 14 from 24 hens. Comments?

I think you should wait a little longer to make judgements on their laying abilitys. I know mine were laying at least an egg a day, but when the winter came, they started laying even MORE. It was a-ma-zing. I don't know though, I could be wrong.

I agree, give it more time...dont chickens just start laying around 20 weeks, they still take a little bit to get in their groove, and you will see some double yolkers for a while too, but I would give it more time....if 20 of your hens out of 24 are newbies....they will come along

Thanks most of the newbies lay small eggs but they are getting bigger. I have some friends who've lost their jobs so eggs and my garden are a big deal right now.

My hubby lost his job too, but we have been raising our own beef, and chickens, eggs, garden, do lots of canning, so I know what you mean, no matter what, we'll have fresh eggs to eat, and plenty of beef in the freezer!! I like to share our eggs with others too, its a good feeling to be able to help out...

The weather here has been awful. The only thing growing good are squash and beans and I bought canning jars. What a waste.

We had a cold wet spring so things got in the ground late, and the rain always seems to miss us this summer, so we have been watering...good luck with the garden, maybe some things will pop up when you arent looking, and keeping fingers crossed about those hens...

I agree with the other posts. Give the birds a little more time. I was averaging 6 eggs per week per bird but lately it has been 5 eggs per week per bird. Probably the heat. Also I had a couple of birds molt.
