whats a good rooster?

A quiet roo I have seen is either eating, sleeping or running.

I have a SLW roo and he crows starting at 540am, then every few hours til about 7 but he's quiet all night long.......plus he is a great protector and provides fertile eggs if a gal goes broody.

In the beginning an older hen pecked at him to stop making all the racket and it did work for a few weeks, very funny to watch.

There are some different things you can do to kind of control the crowing. If you keep your flock in the coop with a shut door and let them out when you're ready and your coop is well insulated then you won't hear it until you're ready for it, well it won't be very loud anyway, and you can also have your roosting bar raised high enough inside the coop so that he can't strectch his neck up to crow.

I had a RIR roo that crowed all the time, 4 am, 3 am, it was crazy and he had to go, I then had a BR roo that I loved and just recently died because of the heat and he only crowed in the am after I let him out and then in the evening before going inside.

But as others have posted, it just depends on the individual roo and some breeds may be better or more quite than others, but I'm not sure.

Well my lil Japanese Bantam roo is really quite, he only crows around 4:30 in the morning and that is about it. He does like to spread the word along with his ladies very loudly when they lay an egg though it can be very annoying. But other then that I have never heard him crow except in the morning now this isn’t to say that he hasn’t crowed during the day when I’m not home, his crow is a nice one, but since he is a lil bantam his voice is really high pitch I my self like the deeper crow of a heavy roo. I really don’t know if the fact that he is quite is due to his breed or just his attitude, but he is great roo.

I know a great rooster for you, an Old English Game Bantam would be perfect you. They have nice soft voices (quiet). You can only have the one though.

I've heard Japanese Bantams are a quieter rooster too. My Bro-in-law swears they hardly crow, but I have no experience in the matter...

just wanted to say that this is an old wives' tale. Roosters can crow just fine by stretching their neck straight out in front of them.

Agree with the roosters crowing pretty much all the time. Draco isn't really loud (compared to others I've owned), but he does it off and on during the day. If the hens range a bit too far out of his sight, then he will crow and call them back. He will crow when he wants them to wake up and go about and about. He will crow sometimes just to hear himself crow, I think
