What's DE for?

Can someone tell me what DE is used for? I know it can be used as an insect repellant but other than that, does it have any benefits? Also, I heard that it can be toxic. How would I use it safely (how old my chicks have to be, what conditions to use it, etc.)?

This isn't about DE, but I thought I'd throw it in here.

I've been using Stall Dry in the coop and run.

Can I mix into the feed, as is done with DE?
