Whats going on with my roos bottom?

I just got this guy. I have him separated from the rest of my flock. I noticed he has a red bottom with missing feathers. Also, his tail feathers see to be in rough shape. She told me he is about 1 year - 1.5 years. She also mentioned she doesn't think he ever mated with her hens.

My he is molting and her rear end looks even worse, but it isn't that red.

I cant say her hens werent, he is alone at the moment.

Roosters will sometimes have red rear ends or legs due to hormonal surges, and it will come and go. So that could be contributing. It does look like feather picking, so his previous hens may have been doing that, or he may have been with other roo's and not the dominant roo. I'd also check him over thoroughly for lice/mites to be sure that isn't a factor. He's a handsome guy, and looks very much like he wants OUT of the space he is in!
