He would appear to be a red sex link. So chances are, if he's from a hatchery, that he's a cross of a rhode island red rooster over a hen that carries the correct genetics to make the cross. Rhode island white is a possibility, but so are many other breeds such as silver laced wyandottes, delawares, etc. Another common cross is a New Hamshire rooster over a white rock hen.

Not always. There are a lot of ways you can make a red sex. I made a couple by crossing a buff orpington rooster with a light brahma. All you need is a rooster that carries red genetics and a hen that carries silver.
