I have 2 broody hens sitting on eggs right now. I have had to take 3 out so far, and am worried that I might not have any developing. One hen has hatched chicks before, and the other is a first timer, but is very intent on her eggs and has not left them. My question is, when I checked the eggs tonight, I found one that I know isn't fertile, but the others have the dark mass in them, but there is also liquid that moves when I am looking at the eggs. I didn't candle my other hatching eggs at this stage, so I'm not sure what I am looking at. Does this mean they are bad, or is this normal? The eggs only came to me from OH, where the first ones came from AZ, and they were in much worse shape (box was put through the wringer before it showed up at my place). Out of 12 eggs only 7 made it in tact, 4 of which hatched

In my eggs from OH, only 3 were broken (of 24!) and they were in great shape - didn't look like as nearly a traumatic trip as the first batch. Hope someone can tell me whether I'm gonna have any chicks out of this hatch! Thanks!!

IT IS HARD TO SAY.... if they are fertile they will have a bullseye type mark on the yolk. But you have to break them open to see it.
Also, if it is fertile it will start to develope. But if they have been shipped the eggs could have been jarred so much that they may not develope. Or could start to develope and quit. Basically, I think the only thing you can do is candle them to see if they are moving, and wait for the 21st day. I hope you get some to hatch~ Good luck~ Tacey
