Alfalfa hay in the coop nests, they stopped pooping in those once they got the gist the nests were edible. Outside nests are just filled with leaves, those are the preferred choice of the girls that like to dig holes to China.

Chickens can be so picky about their nesting boxes. I don't put anything in the box that they may find interesting and peck through! Seeded hay or straw I put in the run for them to forage through. Every hen is different, your hen is beautiful btw!Nice tight flake of straw(hay might work fine too),
shoved in tight(my nests are 14x14) and 'bowled' out a bit.
Worked great for a good long time, then got different straw with not as tight a flake peelable(is that a word?) and lots of seed left that they dug for tearing it all up.
What ever you use, make sure the front of nest has a nice high front(4-6") so the inevitable pullet scratchings don't empty the nests.
