Hey :( we just went out to lock up the chickens a little while ago and we found another dead chicken. We had one yesterday as well. The chest of the chicken was open and the organs were gone. We found a weak spot in a corner of the fence so tomorrow we're going to fix it. What's doing this to my poor hens? ;(

Here's a link from the BYC Learning Center

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-predators-pests-how-to-protect-treat-your-flock

It lists known predators of backyard birds. What types of predators in your area? Sounds like it's possibly a Raccoon or Possom, but could also be a Weasel or Fisher Cat if you have those in your area.

Where I live I have to provide a predator proof secure coop and environment to protect mine from Coyotes, Fox, Raccoons, Possum, Skunk, Hawks, Owls, Eagles, Dogs, and Stray Cats.

Sorry about your losses! It's good you found the entry spot because now, whatever it is, is going to keep coming back to the "food source". Sounds like opossum, raccoon or skunk based on how they are being left and partially eaten.

That's it, My four girls are going in the spare bedroom, Sorry not making lite of the situation, Two of my babies are near deaths door and we have every predator in Northern Ny so i'm really in a panic already for when it's time to go into their coop.Sorry this is happening to you, Good luck

we think its a raccoon. my neighbor has a live trap that we're going to use. Any ideas on bait in it?

One of my friends has luck with banana peals and peanut butter. Other sources say marshmallows. But I have had lots of luck with cat food.

Not yet. No more deaths yet either. We've got a trap out now

Is the top of your pen covered? If not, you could also be dealing with a raptor of some sort.
