Whats the best way to clean 1/4" hardware cloth?

I currently have my quail chicks on 1/4" hardware cloth. They are about a week old and pooping non stop. Most of that does make it through the hardware cloth to the drop pans below but quite a bit as gotten stuck in the 1/4" holes. I've tried a plastic bristle brush but it doesn't seem to get into the holes themselves. Any suggestions on the best way to clean these little holes out? I'm afraid it's creating an unsanitary condition for my quail which defeats the whole purpose of putting them on wire to begin with.

Water to soften it up the brush.
