Athens, Greece.
Hello there. One of my hens for the 500th time pooped this watery dropping. She started it long ago. She is not lethargic or acting weird. She is laying eggs almost every day, eating layer feed and drinking. She also vomits water often. Her crop seems to be fine and she doesn't have any mites or anything like that.
She seems to be suffering from the heat as she is breathing from her mouth but I can't do anything about it. Is heat the reason?

Chickens don't vomit but that's probably water coming up from her crop. Watery poop and that is common when they drink a lot of water.

I'd give her some electrolytes and probiotics, though, to keep her digestion balanced and replenish what she's losing in water. We use Hydro-Hen but many such products can be put in their water. Many people give their chickens electrolytes on the hottest days, too, anyway.

Pretty lady you have there!

I have a hen who does the same thing. She has watery poops and occasionally spits up water. (Then she eats it, but I think she’s only trying to gross me out.) I think it’s just because of the heat. I never really did much about it, and she hasn’t died yet ... 🤷

Was her crop full this morning then? Is that what you mean?

Here is a good article about crop disorders and how to treat.

This one is also good, a little longer, but a good read if you have time.

One of my hens also spits up water in the summer time. She drinks a little too fast sometimes. She’s a larger hen and is always the hottest one, doesn’t do as well with the heat.

Can you feel her crop first thing in the morning, and check if it is empty, full, firm, or squishy soft? Sour crop would cause the crop to not empty, and to be squishy and full day and night, along with a bad odor. If the crop is empty and flat first thing in the morning before eating or drinking, then that is normal. Chickens do drink a lot of water in summer heat, and may have watery droppings. They also can have water come out of the beak when their heads are down. Have you wormed her recently?
