If you only plan to start with 3 or so chickens some folks even make adorable small coops out of a chest of drawers! They turn the bottom drawer into a pull out for bedding, use another half drawer for nest boxes, and screen in the other empty drawer fronts.
If you live in MS I would assume the temps are fairly warm so something like that may work for you as a starter coop! You can get fancy later (and later maybe hubby will be on board and help you).

I hope you build bigger than you need because it gets worse. Picture walking into the farm store next year and they have that breed you couldn't get this time but you cannot get a single chick or it will be lonely and gosh they are cute!
