Also there are a LOT of clever simple homemade coop ideas in some of the threads.

If you only plan to start with 3 or so chickens some folks even make adorable small coops out of a chest of drawers! They turn the bottom drawer into a pull out for bedding, use another half drawer for nest boxes, and screen in the other empty drawer fronts.

If you live in MS I would assume the temps are fairly warm so something like that may work for you as a starter coop! You can get fancy later (and later maybe hubby will be on board and help you).

I bet your hubby was hoping you gave up on the chicken idea since the coop sounded too difficult. LOL. He will curse us when you tell him the folks on the forum gave you new ideas!

It's ok Sweet tater I am happy you are getting encouragement!! I ordered my chicks from Meyers. The only place around me that has chicks is tractor supply and I don't want a rooster. I know there might still be a chance of Meyers messing up but hopefully not. Meanwhile, we will start building the coop tomorrow if the weather will comply.

I am wondering if I should go ahead and order one more chick to bring it up to 6 since the shipping is so much? Or leave it alone....

Sam's club has coops online and one on sale.

Oknev, you're already feeling the allure of chicken math. "I'm already paying x for shipping... Adding another would be just a couple of dollars now." I hope you build bigger than you need because it gets worse. Picture walking into the farm store next year and they have that breed you couldn't get this time but you cannot get a single chick or it will be lonely and gosh they are cute!

I am sure I will want more but we have restrictions so 6 is the max. My husband started on the coop so I am getting excited!
