Whats the life span?!

They last forever in the fridge.

Several months at least.

They never actually last that long around here though.

Clean from the nest, with the bloom on, up to 6 months in the refrigerator. That's according to the Mother Earth News study on various egg storage methods.

We usually eat them sooner than that.

Another qeustion related to this post----How quickly should the eggs be taken out of the nest if they are going to be eaten?

in2chickens: quick as possible, I don't like to leave them in for more than 24 hours-but that's me.
On the egg eating stuff: Broken out eggs whose yolks are broken can go months in the freezer. Obviously, not for hatching.

The bloom is a protective coating that the hen's body puts on it as it is laid. It creates a barrier to keep out bacteria. Washing the egg removes the bloom.

I never knew eggs lasted so long! In the past, if eggs were more than a couple of weeks old, they went to the dogs and I got myself a fresh carton.

Just to be clear, though, what constitutes "washing?" Can the bloom survive the egg being rinsed with water to remove foreign objects from the outside of the egg?
