Haus mit Zwei Huhnern (German for "House with two chickens") I named it for our first two hens. My hubby calls it "are we done yet?" and "What else from the store do you need!?!" and "Your making this harder than it needs to be, its a chicken house!"
My whole area is called "PEEP TOWN" consisting of........... The Frizzle House, Bed and Breakfast, The Loft, The Hen House, PEEPS PLACE ( Bachelor Quarters ) and a ICU/Time out quarters. I have a large packing crate that is going to become a coop. NO name for this yet!
I have been cogitating on this issue for months, without success. My friends and I refer to the A-frame coop I built as the "Linda Coop," and the kit coop I purchased from eBay as the "eBay Coop." Those are just labels, not NAMES.
Now I'm building another coop, which is 4 ft by 8 ft and tall enough I can walk inside it for cleaning and whatnot. The whole compound (my back yard) could be called The Olmstead Homestead, I guess. But that's hardly original.
Last night, during that dreamy state into which I often fall while snuggled in my recliner, a name floated out of the ether: Chez Poulet.
I was pretty darned excited that I came UP with something, at last, until I double-checked the definition of poulet: the noun refers to the flesh of a chicken used for food. Yikes. My flock is NOT comprised of meaties. I've named everyone, and they will all live there as long as nature and fate has determined. (The Old-Hens House might be a name for one of the coops, eventually......) Then I kept googling and discovered another definition, which I like better: The French word for a young, tender spring chicken. Sorta kinda better.
What do y'all think - could Chez Poulet make you think of McNuggets Mansion or something similar?
Also, I've got two ducklings which I think I'll eventually mix into the flock of chickens, so maybe Poulet isn't even appropriate.
....unless I make a little duck house just for the Cayugas.....
While mine is not done yet, I have been perusing these pages trying to come up with a name, and it just this second struck me, I will name it "Fowly Forge" ! It will sit very close to my forge building, and they will get to see me in the forge working on the weekends, I imagine the braver birds will want to come on in with me till the banging starts, so I believe it will be appropriate, I named my building "The forge in the forest" after a restaurant in Carmel. Can't wait till the birds are ready!!
