Duckgirl Saxonies are common all around this area but I just havent heard of many pure silver appleyards anywhere. But I have been away from domestics for a coupla of years. I am going to do some more trout runners again from a friend who has great lines.(he says he has eggs for me this week)He just feeds the extras to his pet wild hog.

I also may do some gray calls again. forgot about them hookbills Oregon

the most rare ducks in this area are saxonys, welsh harlequins, and anconas. i think it all depends on the area

i spose there are better lookin breeds but i just want the rareness of them.

A word of caution, and I'm saying this because it does seem like you're doing this properly and doing your research before hand, which is muchly to be commended...

If you're getting them because they are rare, will you still want them and take care of them when they are not as rare?

If you find a breed you like for their own unique characteristics, you might find it easier to stay bonded to those birds, and stay invested in them long term, than if you just pick the most rare.

Besides, the most rare changes from year to year.

Finally, the more rare birds frequently have some characteristic that makes them more fragile or less appealing, which may make keeping them alive and healthy - or finding a good home for them, if you should have to get rid of them - more difficult.

If you really like a breed, then go ahead and get that one! We have people who love fuzzy geese, and people who think they look weird. Same with ducks with topknots and ducks with carruncles and three toed chickens and all the rest - if you like it, it doesn't matter if other people don't fancy it. And be sure to post pictures here on BYC!

I second that emotion, Hossfeathers.

Ducks are wonderful - disgusting, messy, smelly, weird, alien creatures - the work involved is HUGE, so you should get the breed that suits you and your situation, and a breed you LOVE.
My Anconas are exactly the duck I was looking for. It is nice they are a rare breed, but there are breeds that are endangered that would not suit my situation at all. Having ducks should be its own reward.

Try going to meet the breeds you think you would like & watch them in action. Help out at friends or local farmers who raise ducks for a few days. If you fall in love, you'll know.

before i get any breed i want to know as much as i can. i do plan on getting some mallards, i have had them before and love them as well as my d'uccle chickens
