So I have just went through my first 50lb bag of starter that I got with my chicks 10 weeks ago. Would it be too early to switch them to layer feed? I can get feed from a local milling company but they only sell in 100lb bags. I don't want to get a bag of starter and have a bunch left over. Unless it's OK to feed them starter for longer than 18 weeks. I am just trying to avoid going to TSC and paying for 50lbs when I can get twice as much for the same price from the milling company. Also should I stick with crumble or can I switch to pellet or does it not even matter? Thanks for the help.

Depends on your needs. I am almost always hatching new chicks, and I frequently feed as an oatmeal-like consistency wet mash, so I prefer crumbles. Some feeders really don't like crumbles. Pellet, otoh, has somewhat less waste, since spilled feed can be found and eaten more easily - though serving crumbles as oatmeal is nearly as good.

In essence, both work - which is better for you depends on your circumstances.
