I have a cockerel of unknown exact origins I got it from a friend who said "My hens are all purebred ranging from speckled Sussex, brown leg horn,Americana, and Golden sexlink. Dad is Americana."
His comb unlike the others I got from her is flat, like someone smooshed it. All the others stand tall and spiky. Hes about 8 weeks old maybe a touch older.
Forgive me as I am new to chickens.

He just has a different type of comb is all. There’s a couple different ones out there. Can’t remember them all but there’s pics out there 😊

I personally prefer the shorter ones because of less chance of frostbite in the winter.

That chicken has a mother with a rose comb--perhaps a Wyandotte of some color. His own comb is either rose comb or walnut comb (depends on which comb genes he inherited from his dad.)

That's good for me too, I live in NW Montana, we get very cold and snowy here. Only about 50miles south of Canada.

No Wyandotte in my friends flock. Only speckled Sussex, brown leg horn,Americana, and Golden sexlink. Dad is for sure Americana.

Oh, I thought those were example breeds, and that your friend probably had more breeds that were not on the list.

If those are all the breeds, then maybe the brown leghorn has a rose comb--they come in both rose comb and single comb varieties.

That sure looks like a rose comb, and a rose comb can only happen when at least one parent has a rose comb.

If it's not a rose comb, then it would have to be a pea comb from the Ameraucana father, but it just does not look like a pea comb to me.

Is it possible that's a pullet and not a cockerel like I've been told? 2 others I got from her turned out to be pullets. What are your thoughts?
