I also experience either one or both ends of the egg from one of my RI to be darker than the rest of the egg, she has been doing this everytime she lays her eggs. A chicken and egg fancier that I have talked to about this told me that it could possibly be due to a lack of calcium in her diet but she eats the same as everyone else, and their eggs dont come out looking like hers, and the egg shells are really strong for the most part, but I have noticed, that sometimes the end that is discolored, will sometimes "seep" when hard boiling the egg due to a softness in the shell, but when used in any other fashion, they look and taste just as good as the rest of them. Way back, someone had suggested to me that the chicken may be infected with some type of viral infection, but she checked out okay with our poultry vet, and she is close to 5 yrs old already, so I discredited that notion. I think I am going to stick with the other poster in this thread, something went different in the paint department!

I like the paint roller idea. About right to. Pigment is not calcium, its like paint. Its the last thing that goes on the egg as its flowing its way through the system. So if she lays in a hurry, it doesn't get a full paint job. I notice it with the really large eggs especially, like they run out of pigment and that is probably a common problem on these two tone jobs.

Besides there's so much to do, so many bugs to gobble and things to check out. Who can blame them, for doing a fast paint job. These girls have goodies to go after.

Edited to add: I especially like the splotchy paint jobs. Kind of artsy.
