I have 2 Marans. I didn't realize there are different types of marans but I'm guessing these are the cuckoos. However the ones color is throwing me off. He/she has a lot more white than the other one.

More white means male. Less white means female.
The barring gene is sex linked meaning females only have one gene for it while males can have two genes for it.
Barring stops the color so the white area is where there's no color. Since males have two copies they stop twice as much color resulting in more white then the females that only have one gene.

We definitely suspected him as the male but didn't realize that's how coloring worked with the different genders. It's new to us. We got some to help keep ticks and other bugs down since we are in a wooded area with horses and bring our dogs out to the barn. We've got a couple different breeds now the fun of discovering the cockerels so we can find them new homes. I'm pretty sure one of our bantams is also a cockerel based off his comb and one or 2 of our freedom rangers.

This is the best I've got right now in more natural lighting. I was actually trying to get a pic of the bantam to figure out what breed it is.
