I have an americauna (who I guess to be at about 13 weeks old). I don't know if it is a pullet or cockerel...thinking pullet at this point if it even matters. She appeared perfectly healthy before I added her to my laying flock (had her quarantined for 2 months) and after her first night in the coop she started acting sluggish and feathers fluffed up, tail feathers hanging low. I have no idea what she has and I am pretty confident that it is not contagious because it has been 2 weeks now and her coop buddy is not ill and neither are any of the other birds she has come in contact with. I started her on Tylan 50 injectable yesterday and buttermilk and yogurt for probiotics. How would I know if this is a roundworm infestation or coccidiosis? She is pooping very small amounts (no blood) infrequently. She has no signs of upper respiratory infection. Can I deworm her while on Tylan? Or even add medicated chick starter to her food? I have pour on ivermectin I could use....

If you want to try treating for cocci, you'll need to get Corid (or Sulmet, but Corid is so much easier on them.) I don't think wormer and Tylan would cancel each other out, but I don't know that I would put that stress on her. I would have started with Corid, I believe, but it's all guesswork. If they really have a roundworm load, you might very well see them in the poop. You could see if your vet will test for worms if you bring in some poop. Lots of times they will, and it's not expensive. Of course, the worms may be there and the test negative. Ivermectin is mostly effective against lice/mites, the ones that bite. dawg53 is an excellent source on worming.

Thank you, maybe I should try the corid then. She seems to be hanging in there at the moment...wish I could get her to drink more!

Just wanted to post an update. I put our chicken on twice daily injections of Tylan50. Before starting her on the antibiotics 5 days ago she was puffed up and lying on her side. She started really perking up yesterday, standing up, walking around ect. Not sure what her issue was but it definitely wasn't contagious whatever it was.
